Aaron presents his research at the Molecular Medicine of Sphingolipids conference

Aaron presented his most recent research at the 3rd International Molecular Medicine of Sphingolipids in French Lick, Indiana, USA.

In a talk and poster entitled “Investigating the role of pH on ceramide accumulation in cystic fibrosis”; Aaron presented his novel work demonstrating that accumulation of the sphingolipid ceramide in CF may occur as a result of alterations in the pH of the airway surface liquid (ASL). Driven by the loss of CFTR function these changes in pH within the ASL can alter key metabolic pathways, including those involved in ceramide sythensis and degradation promoting its accumulation. Ceramide accumulation is thought to play a key role in driving inflammation in CF and other diseases, although the mechanism of action remains poorly understood.
